Dental FAQs Answered by Our Dental Specialists at Turtle Town Dental

What should you expect during your first dental visit?

Your first visit is important to us as it will allow us the chance to address all your dental concerns and present an individualized treatment plan that is best for you. At Turtle Town Dental, our patients are our number priority. We are here to listen to your concerns and help you achieve a beautiful and healthy smile.

How often should you see the dentist?

We recommend that children, teens, and adults should all see the dentist for a dental exam and a regular checkup at least once every six months. Patients who are at a greater risk for oral cancer or gum disease may be required to see the dentist more than just twice a year. Regular dental exams and cleaning visits are essential in preventing dental problems and maintaining a beautiful healthy smile. Our doctor will help determine how often you should visit the dentist for regular checkups. Schedule Your Appointment Today!

Why is visiting the dentist so important?

Visiting the dentist regularly will not only help keep your teeth and mouth healthy but will also help keep the rest of your body healthy. Dental care is important because it protects you against periodontal (gum) disease, which can lead to tooth and bone loss.

What are the causes of bad breath?

  • Morning time – Saliva movement nearly stops during sleep, reducing cleansing and renewal allowing bacteria to grow, causing bad breath.
  • Periodontal (gum) disease – Bacteria and food debris residing under inflamed and bleeding gums.
  • Poor Oral Hygiene – Food particles remaining in the mouth promote bacterial growth. Dental cavities and improperly fitted dental appliances may cause odor from bacteria residing in cavities.
  • Tobacco products – Smoking causes dry mouth leading to bad breath. Turtle Town Dental can treat a patient suffering halitosis or general bad breath. Schedule Your Appointment Today!

How do you get rid of bad breath?

Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, is an unpleasant and embarrassing condition that everyone experiences from time to time. There are various reasons for halitosis, but the main reason is due to microbial deposits on the tongue. This is why it’s important to brush far back on the tongue or use an anti-bacterial mouthwash each time you brush.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is used to describe various diseases that affect the gums, bones, and surrounding structures of teeth. The most common types of adult periodontal disease are gingivitis and peridontitis. Gingivitis causes bleeding and reddening of gums. Peridontitis damages the bone and connective tissue that support the teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss. Risk factors for periodontal disease include poor oral hygiene, poor nutrition, smoking, chewing tobacco, and diabetes. The existence of bone destruction under the gums cannot be visually detected.

What causes tooth decay?

Tooth decay is caused by acids that are produced by bacteria in the presence of sugar. To prevent decay, these bacteria, sugar, and acids must be periodically removed by brushing and flossing.

Are amalgam (silver) fillings safe?

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), up to 76% of dentists use silver-containing mercury to fill teeth. The ADA also states that silver fillings are safe and that studies have failed to find any link between silver- containing mercury and any medical disorder.

If I have braces, do I still need dental checkups every six months?

Yes! You will still need to visit your general dentist every six months for your regular check-up and professional teeth cleaning. With braces, food may be caught in places that your toothbrush can’t reach. This causes bacteria to build up and can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. This is vital as orthodontic treatment can make your teeth more difficult to clean. Schedule Your Appointment Today!

What if I have a dental emergency?

Call our office to obtain emergency contact information in case you experience a dental emergency after hours, over the weekend, or during holidays.

Cosmetic dentistry –

If you’re feeling somewhat self-conscious about your teeth, or just want to improve your smile, cosmetic dental treatments may be the answer to a more beautiful, confident smile. Cosmetic dental procedures can improve your teeth and enhance your smile, creating a more beautiful, satisfying, and confident smile. Depending on your particular needs, cosmetic dental treatments can change your smile dramatically, from restoring a single tooth to having a full mouth makeover. Ask your dentist how you can improve the health and beauty of your smile with lumineers, porcelain veneers, in-office laser whitening, Snap-On Smile, and more.

At what age should I start taking my child to see the dentist?

Turtle Town Dental recommends seeing your child starting at 2-3 years old. We allow parents to come with their child. The purpose of the first visit is to familiarize the child with the dental setting, perform a general oral check, and a cleaning. After the first visit, be sure and schedule regular checkups every six months!
